I went into Mary Whitcombe expecting a gentle Victorian romance and came out the other side having devoured the whole thing in one sitting. This book does NOT give you time to breathe.
Poor Mary gets shuttled from wealthy orphan to convent girl to woman-on-her-own in 19th-century society, and at every turn Nifora piles on more. The love story with the gardener is gorgeous and heartbreaking. The second half is genuinely tense and surprising. I was audibly reacting to this book by the end.
Manhattan Book Review called it a “nonstop” page-turner and they are completely correct. Clear your schedule.
