The Buffalo Butcher completely consumed me. I expected a fun historical thriller, and I got that — plus a story about five women refusing to let themselves and their community be picked off while the city looks away. I didn’t see that combination coming and I am so glad I found this book.
Brighton’s 1901 Buffalo setting is incredible. The Pan-American Exposition as backdrop for a serial killer plot is inspired — you have this massive, buzzing, electric spectacle of progress, and underneath it, women being killed. The juxtaposition is devastating and intentional.
The five women at the center are individually realized and collectively powerful. I finished this in two sittings and immediately wanted to tell everyone I know.
