The best fantasy novels establish gravity early. You feel the world, the pressure, and the promise before the map has finished unfolding.

I don’t need an encyclopedia in chapter one. I need confidence. A sense that the author knows the rules of the world, the cost of power, and the difference between mystery and clutter. Once that’s in place, I’m happy to follow them almost anywhere.

Fantasy is at its most addictive when wonder and consequence show up together. Pretty scenery is nice. Stakes are nicer. Give me the feeling that something ancient, dangerous, or magnificent is already in motion and I’m locked in.

That’s the kind of book I keep chasing. The one that makes you check the page count only to realize you are already far deeper in than you meant to be.
